Pros and Cons of webcomics hosts.

I've narrowed my Comic Diary host down to three choices, much thanks to everyone who piped up. Yep, I want to use a host. I have my own stuff on my site and gURL.com already. Now I want to parasitize someone else's readership! Raowr!

(Plus the onlinecomics.net auto updates integration can't be beat on all three!)

DrunkDuck.com
I use to have a comic here, in ye olden days. Anyone remember that? No? Ah, well, it was years before I went weekly.
Pros: It's big and established and I used to hang out on it. And it's bird-themed, which I genuinely appreciate (I use Flock as a browser, if that's any indication). Allows users to leave comments.
Cons: Where the hell is the RSS feed??

Webcomicsnation.com
Pros: Raina Telgemeier uses it for her Smile comic. Has nice and easy to access to RSS and del.icio.us and stuff. Allows comments.
Cons: Homepage... so... second generation web design... Hurting... spider sense! how do you fins comics on this thing? I came on and got lost. If I'm using this system to reach more people, I should hardly think I want to exile my comics to a bland and untidy list of links on a beige site like this.

comicgenesis.com
Pros: From the people who brought you Keenspot.
Cons: From the people who brought you Keenspot. Once again, where is the RSS feed? And no reader comments?? But I want external validation now!

In Other News
Rode motorcycle to class at night. Fingers nearly froze off. So cold, with my fingers right up there in the wind chill. Need... warm... gloves... Couldn't feel my fingers. Don't know what to do. Leary of taking extra classes in colder weather.

On Comicgenesis.com
People on there usually use tagboards for reader comments.

They do have an RSS feed (http://[Your comic title here].comicgenesis.com/rss.xml). Don't know much about it, though. Never used mine. (And don't ask me about mine. I'd rather forget that comic ever existed).

Er, RSS Feeds. Each comic has its own separate one.

I'm using RSSPect for my RSS feed, because I'm lazy and it took like, five seconds to set up.

The xml push is all taken care of by the dudes at rsspect, and you can manage your feed settings all on their site, but I could see how one would prefer to actually have their own webhost do the RSS management instead of some external site.

I HAVE seen some comics on Drunkduck with an "RSS, subscribe now!" button on them, so I think the functionality is there, but I've never used Drunkduck and I am thus useless. :D

I know people that use all three, but that seems like overkill.

Comicgenesis? ugh. Just... ugh.

DrunkDuck is good for getting new people since all updates show up on their portal page in a "Recently Updated" list. Due to the number of comics you don't stay on there very long. If you post comments on other people's comics folks will click over to take a look. That's what makes it a good community. I took my comics down when Platinum Studios bought them but I'm exceptionally paranoid. I'm considering going back to mirror my own site "just in case". It's very easy to use.

Webcomics Nation is about to get an overhaul, I think. Joey Manly runs it and the Modern Tales family of sites. He just formed a partnership with Josh of Onlinecomics.net and ComicSpace so other good things will be coming.

They're free, setup on all three and see which annoys you the least. They each have their backend quirks. ^_^

Get better gloves and keep going to the classes that improve your skills!

Seeing as how the popular webcomics at Comic Genesis end up printed in Keenspot collections, I'd vote for that one. That's a door to publication, and it would certainly pad your resume.

On gloves

The best solution I've found for gloves is to get a good, protective pair of leather gloves ( ones with armor over the knuckles are ideal ) and wear a pair of silk glove liners under for insulation. It's the best of both worlds, in my opinion.

Re: On gloves

I actually got some Thinsulate lined waterproof ones from NewEnough. Couldn't stand the cold any longer!

Why only three?

Sam Charette here, owner of Comic Dish, yet another webcomic host. Of the three that you have chosen, I'd suggest that Drunk Duck is the best choice, if you don't mind the ads. Comic Genesis is a pretty old system, and WCN is about to get an overhaul (as stated) so it's not the best time to rate it.

Smackjeeves would be my second choice (DD being third), as it's a great host, few ads and it's easy to go looking through the comics. It is actually bigger than Drunk Duck now, has commenting and, I believe, an RSS feed for your comic. You can also play around with your comic site more than you can with DD.

My first choice would be my own, of course. Comic Dish is free, has RSS, comments, no ads, versatile system and if you really want to you can set it up to automatically mirror your comics on Drunk Duck and Smackjeeves, so you can use 3 systems to get more publicity, without the added work involved.

If you are sure that you want to limit it to those, which is understandable, I'd say that the clear winner is Drunk Duck. It's easy to use, has a large user base, etc. I wouldn't even bother thinking about how Keenspot uses Comic Genesis to get new comics. The chances of that are so small that it shouldn't count for too much. You're far more likely to make it on your own than go into Keenspot, no matter where you are.

I will mirror through your site, as exposure is what I want! Thanks for all the insider info :)
