With Teeth, the quest continues
I went to the orthodontist for my consultation today. It was two years or so ago that I had my last one. I couldn't afford the procedures described then, and now that I live on my own, I still can't afford them. But my dental hygienist remarked that my jaw bones were thinning, a very bad sign of improper wear, and I decided to get a second opinion on correcting my cross bite. Here's some of the photos they took with notes by me.

Don't say you don't notice it.

Nothing infuriates me more than when I am describing my plight, and someone says, Oh gee, I don't notice a problem. You look fine.

It's not about how my teeth look to other people. I like my body and don't give a toot what you think about my teeth. It's about the pain I feel when I talk for longer than five minutes at conventions. It's the popping in my jaw I get when eating baby carrots. It the thinning bones that will cause my teeth to fall out. I could care less about how it looks. I care about how it feels, and right now, it hurts. And it will only get worse. And if I don't act very soon, my jaws bones will thin to the point where braces will be very risky and I may not be able to have the procedure done at all.

At the convention, there was a man going on about how people can pick themselves up out of the mud, how young people don't have to care about health insurance, and why should he pay taxes to assist lazy people. I nearly slapped him. As a young person living from paycheck to paycheck, I have no way of fixing this problem in a timely manner.

I am trying to find a way, but we're talking about $15-25,000. Let me write that out: fifteen to twenty-five thousand dollars. You could put a down payment on a house with that kind of money or buy a nice new car or spen years in college getting a shiny degree to get a real job to pay for that procedure (although by that time my jaw will be too thin). I don't have a fraction of that in savings.

No, I don't have health insurance, because I cannot afford it. And even if the state would pick me up as a charity case, I now earn too much to be eligible. I don't think they could do massive surgery at the local health clinic anyway. This is usually considered unnecessary plastic surgery by health insurance and government agencies, even though it means the loss of my teeth in the long run.

Never before have I understood the desperation that leads people to steal and rob. I wouldn't do these things, but I realize that these people are not evil, not cruel. They're sad and desperate. They are humans, too, and they just don't see a way out.

Update
I didn't expect so much of a response. At the encouragement of others, I have set up a special PayPal account that will be used exclusively to pay for the costs of surgery and follow-up care. Leigh Dragoon has kindly agreed to audit. Thank you, Leigh. And thank you all for being so supportive. There may be shirts, so if you donate more than $25, please specify your shirt size in men's or women's.

People really can not notice that your mouth is odd. When my brother and I went to get evaluated for braces, it turned out that somehow his bottom teeth were all arranged a whole tooth to the left - even though there were no missing or extra teeth and his jaw was perfectly fine (in fact, they had to take a tooth out in order to "fix" it). We'd never noticed that bellow the middle space of his front teeth was a whole tooth and not a matching space.

However, that said, I totally support your decision to get it fixed. The problems you describe would probably only get much worse if they weren't fixed.

And yes, that man should have been slapped. There are lots of young people who have serious medical issues that need to be fixed with money they don't have, and it's not because they're lazy, it's because it takes a long time to work your way up to a larger income, and some people may NEVER work up that larger, completely self-reliant income. Yes, there are a lot of people who sap the system (not necessarily youth, either), but there are much, much more who NEED it.

I really hope you find a way to get the money and the treatment you need. *hugs* Best of luck.

I went through years of hell getting my teeth fixed. My reaction: Be cautious, be smart about it. Part of the reason they think I have migraines is because of dental work done to me.

And on the payment stuff? There might be dental insurance programs and/or talk to your dentist to see if there's a possibility for a payment plan or reduced payments?

And also, if you do not have medical/dental insurance, any type of procedure, medical visit, etc that you pay for out of pocket? Tax deductible.

I really hope that helps :/ *lots of hugs and juju*

Easy solution: relocate in Europe. Become French or Nordic; the State would pay for that procedure. In the other countries, it would pay about the 90% We Your European Fans will help you with the accomodation.
What about the Writer's Guild of USA? I read somewhere that they provide health insurance. You would apply as a writer, right?

I've heard suggested that people go to dental schools for low(er) cost, routine work... I don't know if there's one in your area that does more advanced procedures. Oral surgeons have to learn somewhere, right? But I don't know if the possible lower-cost is worth the possible greater-pain from having a n00b work on you...

Good luck, either way.

One of my friends, who has had orthodontic work done for as long as I can remember, recently had to have a procedure (similar to the one you're talking about, I think) where her jaw was broken and reset, with screws and all that jag.

She should have had it done as a kid rather than as a thirty tear old but, shockingly, her parents couldn't afford the surgery. She had the same problems as you, although she never mentioned bone thinning.

On the upside, she healed pretty quickly. So there's that. I've got metal holding bits of me together, and it generally doesn't hurt*, so the screws and such, hopefully, won't be a big deal.

*Weather changes ache, but that could be down to all the broken and healed bones.

Rachel! I'm so sorry to hear about your dental pain & dilemma. I know that it's going to be a tough road, but I know you will also make it through this with the same strength and perseverance that I respect about your comic work. I realize that must sound brow-numbingly optimistic... but you just strike me as a girl who won't fail. Can't be helped. :)

Would it be possible to find a specialist that will take a down payment and then subsequent monthly payments? That is how I've often had to pay for medications and doctor visits.

I've linked to you on the Friends of Lulu blog. It's not much, but I hope it will help.

I wish I could provide some support in addition to emotional. I'm very self conscious about my teeth and the thought of having to face the reality of losing them I imagine is more dreadful than most people would be willing or capable of understanding.

In regards to appearance, I didn't notice it but I had noticed the way you bite or hold your lips differently on the few times I've spoken to you. I didn't really make the connection at the time that this was the visual evidence of the crossbite.

After reading your post, I must say I'm actually far more aware and educated on just what precisely a cross bite is. My father and I have them though we never really knew the term for it, and what we have is fairly tame compared to what you've pictured here.

*sigh* Even though you haven't asked, I really wish there was a way for me, and even others, to help out with the practical aspects. You're a wonderful person and you don't deserve to go through this kind of stress. If I come across anything that'd be of help I'll let you know.

*hugs*

...having shifted my own jaw about to experience what it feels like, I have to say that bloody hell, is that ever uncomfortable! O.O

It must be so annoying to have people assume you want sometime done for cosmetic purposes when in reality it's for a decent recent. Poor you :(

First of all, I'll second what someone else already said...I don't don't tend to notice when people have something wrong with their teeth. I know people with chipped teeth who won't smile for pictures and yet it's such a shame because they have the most gorgeous smiles and nobody ever notices the chipped tooth except them. I think it's partially that not everyone looks carefully at teeth and partially that a physical problem is almost always more obvious to the person with it, not the people who look at them and care about them.

Anyways, yer beautiful in the pictures you posted. Just for the record...you've got nothing to feel self-conscious about.

As for the cost of this procedure...oh my god. I don't even know what to say. Even here in Canada, dentistry isn't covered unless you have a separate plan through a job, and I think that's disgusting. There are some basics that should always be covered, no matter where you are; basic healthcare, vision care, and dental. If I were in charge...

Please keep us updated...I'm sending good thoughts.

I haven't read all comments, so forgive me if I'm repeating someone.

1) Seems like you might be able to talk to your orthodontist, or oral surgeon, or a few other people in the field, and see if someone will charge you less given your situation. My ex-boyf had dental work done by a clinic for low-income people, paying on a sliding scale.

2) Definitely ask about a loan. Explore all your options.

3) I had maxillofacial surgery done about nine years ago, so if you have any questions about it, send 'em my way. My problem wasn't this bad but it probably would have gotten that way. (My parents paid for it, and they probably did some kind of financial wiggling with investments or home equity to manage it.)

I am SO sorry to hear about all this, Rachel!

You're a fantastically talented artist, no chance they'd let you swap some brochure designs or ad designs for their agency for giving you a significant break on the costs?

And if anyone arranges some kind of fund raiser, let me know.
